Although it helps keep printing costs down, it also means the head isn’t directly integrated with the cartridge and the printer has to do a lot more squeezing and pumping to keep its system primed. The black text on the page should not show ink streaks. Ink is dated as it will dryout or at least settle abit and cause flow problems. By contrast, I've been using a Pixma ip1500, for which I've been buying black ink for about $3 (instead of $8) and color ink for about $4 (instead of $18).
